Gönül Sen-Menzel was an artist and writer. She attended the College of Education of Istanbul and completed it in 1972 with a degree as an art specialist. She then worked for nine years as an art teacher. She continued her studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (Arts Academy of the city Düsseldorf) and graduated as the best of her class with the additional title "Meister" to her degree.
She began her doctorate (PH.D.) in 2009 and has been working as Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in the University of Paderborn (University of Paderborn) since.

In addition to her artworks, she has been writing and illustrating for the educational publishing house Anadolu. Her series "Vita" (written in Turkish, German – also published in Japan and China), illustrates the various journeys of the vitamin called Vita within the human body. Gönül Sen-Menzel also commited to work for the rights of children and women.

Gönül died on March 29, 2014, in her studio in in Volkhoven, four days before her 65th birthday. The funeral was held with over 200 guests in her studio, which she described as her world and life. The funeral ceremony was attended, among other people, by her close friend and former television presenter Mine Selen, the former member of German parliament Lale Akgün, the Cologne District Mayor Cornelia Wittsack-Junge and Prof. Dr. Zehra Ipsiroglu.

The guests were also able to hear a poem by gönül, she had read during a WDR documentation a couple weeks earlier. Numerous planned exhibitions will still take place even after her death.
